Chapter Eight
Alvin was hard at work managing the complexities of the conspiracy that he had planned in only a few hours. It has been about a week since the conspiracy took place, yet the realities and difficulties of establishing a government after seizing power; they continue to manifest themselves, even several days after the events transpired. Discontent among the fleet against the government was simmering for years, and causing the angry elements to throw up arms in rebellion was not as difficult as Alvin originally suspected it would be; however even if the rotten house is easy to topple, one still has to work hard to construct a new one quickly, or else one risks the passions of anger being directed towards the new fledgling state.
A great percentage of the Engineer core backed his plot, especially as he meticulously laid out the different paths and avenues that they would use to ensure a high probability of success. For example, the several contingency plans that were thought of were not even needed, just the bluff of an FTL signal pulse and the showing of more than one conspirator was enough to achieve a critical mass of support. Still, the great and carefully planned strategies of shutting down fleet communications, ensuring that critical personnel are armed and otherwise supportive and receptive of the coup; and a whole number of similar strategies, was what gave Alvin that core group of critical followers, well trained and loyal in the field of engineering; that are vital to the success of any forced change, especially in a world dependent on technology.
âAlvin, this is what the military wants to see with regards to the government, the Iceshine just sent this to us.â Said Juan, one of the original backers and proposers of the conspiracy, and now the Secretary of State of the Terrani Government.
âTell them that we refuse, every drafted soldier needs to be armed, and trained in the use of arms. Both to curtail abuse of power among the elites, and to ensure to preservation of the rights of liberty, the people will never be disarmed, only empowered under our administration.â Replied Alvin.
âVery well, Iâll send our response to them at once, they will naturally throw some arguments, and may even pull the card of dissatisfaction with the new âfledglingâ government.â Replied Juan.
âRemind them that the Head Admiral will not like pansies, who spend more time talking, than improving the quality of their nation.â Said Alvin.
âOf course, anything else in the unlikely event that they are not swayed by that argument?â Asked Juan.
âAdd that the people already have significant access to arms, that the Engineer core has already begun arming those working the mining vessels and the assembly ships, and tell them that those people would be very upset at any attempt to reverse the progress and empowerment that they now enjoy. Add the fact that the Eranian enemy would only love to see us enter a civil war over foolish reasons.â Replied Alvin.
âVery good, Iâll
